Stories of Hope: Elizabeth Aguilar

Born in Mexico and raised in the United States, Elizabeth Aguilar was a bright 19-year old paralegal who dreamt of becoming a lawyer or a doctor. She was also a future mom-to-be, pregnant and ecstatic about it. Twenty-five weeks into her pregnancy, Elizabeth developed preeclampsia and suffered a stroke. The baby was saved, but Elizabeth lost her life.

When approached about organ donation, Elizabeth’s parents did not know what their daughter’s wish would have been, but they said “yes” immediately. Three months later, they found the pink donor dot on her driver license. “It was so relieving to know we had followed her wishes. It gave us joy,” remembered her mother Maria, who is now raising her daughter’s two-year-old son.
