In Loving Memory of Alyssa J. Galvan

My name is Veronica Cosme I am a donor family and a kidney transplant recipient. In 1998, I was diagnosed with kidney failure. My kidneys slowly deteriorated. 15 years later, 2013 I was very ill, no longer active, prepping for dialysis. I received a terrifying call, my vibrant 18 year old niece Alyssa was struck by a car. My sister whispered to me “If Alyssa doesn’t make it my family and I want you to have her kidney.” On August 16, 2013 Doctors pronounced her brain dead.  Feeling sad and devastated, the testing began to see if we matched. UCLA’s nurse called me and said “you both are a perfect and rare match.” I felt blessed to receive her precious gift. I was transplanted on August 19th 2013 instantly my kidney function was perfect.

Alyssa was so outgoing and had just started CSUF. eCampaign_Alyssa_PhotoShe saved 4 lives through organ donation. She donated blood to the American Red Cross. She knew that helping others made a positive difference. There are no words to express how grateful I am to my niece, my hero. I think about Alyssa and thank her every day for giving me life. I encourage you all to register to become donors. You can make a powerful impact in someone’s life.
