Transplant Nurses Week Spotlight: Corinne Reyes Mercado, RN

Corinne Reyes Mercado, a mother of three who could best be described by those who know her best as a caring, funny, and creative soul with a love of crafting. Like many of us she chooses to unwind after a long day at work watching something lighthearted that makes you laugh like The Office or Below Deck. She also enjoys taking some time to be with nature, going on long walks and taking in the beauty of the trees or rivers that are around her.
However, Corinne doesn’t have a regular nine to five career, in fact for the past twenty years she hasn’t had what any of us would call a regular job. Corinne is a Transplant Nurse working with children and adolescents at Stanford Children’s Health – Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. Before becoming a transplant nurse Corinne was considering taking time away from nursing and spending more time to be with her family. But after hearing about Stanford Children’s new transplant program, her plans changed. “Something ignited in me, another surge of inspiration. I knew I had to be a part of it,” says Reyes Mercado. “It was scary but learning all this new knowledge and skills to best help our patients really just renewed my core of nursing”.
Any healthcare worker will tell you that their job has its rewarding moments, but for Corinne it’s getting to spend time connecting with the families she works with and seeing her patients get healthier. Hearing the news about her patient receiving a transplant and assisting with their recovery afterwards and then seeing them go home is the most rewarding feeling. What most people don’t think about is the other side to working in transplant, “It’s a double-edged sword, knowing that the higher up the patient gets on the waiting list, also means their health has declined,” says Reyes Mercado. “It’s hard sometimes knowing that someone else had to pass for this organ to be given to our patient. For each of my patients, I take a moment of silence before going into their room and tell myself that my intention is to help and heal. I also thank the person who donated this organ to help another live on.”
When asking Corinne what she wants the public to know about her hospitals transplant program and how organ donation affects it, she responded with “It’s a miracle really! Organ donation helps give patients a second chance at life and at healing. I wish more people would sign up to be donors. Seeing Donate Life’s informative videos just shows how amazing that one person could save so many lives.” When someone is considering registering as an organ donation, she implores people to do their research and look at the resources available to them. “Talk to the experts,” says Reyes Mercado, as a Pre-Pandemic volunteer at Donate Life’s Run Corinne is all too familiar with the organizations support and education regarding the organ donation community. She’s even seen some of her former patients while volunteering!
Before ending our interview, Corinne wished to leave us with this advice:
“I love my job, but I’m afraid for the future of nursing. A nursing shortage is being feared in the next decade, and I want people to know of the wonderful moments and achievements nursing can have. Helping people at their most vulnerable, encompasses my job and its really rewarding to help others at those moments. I hope this pandemic doesn’t deter people away from the profession. Without nurses, hospital structures would crumble without the bedside manner and support they offer.”

Donate Life CA and Goodwill of OC Team Up for Innovative Donor Registration Initiative

Santa Ana, CA (April 2, 2021): This April for National Organ Donation Month, you can donate more than clothes and gently used items at Goodwill of Orange County stores – you can donate life. Through an innovative partnership between Donate Life CA and Goodwill of Orange County, all Goodwill shoppers and donors will be given the opportunity to register as organ, eye and tissue donors.

Historically, most people register at the DMV when they get or renew their driver’s license, but this month, they will also be able to easily register as an organ donor when they drop off donations or shop at any Goodwill store in Orange County.

Each day, 20 people in the U.S. die waiting for an organ donation, and there are more than 100,000 people currently waiting for a lifesaving transplant. More than 22,000 people, or 20% of the national waiting list, are right here in California. The program, created by local ad agency Casanova//McCann, aims to significantly increase the number of registered organ donors here in O.C.

“We are excited to be part of this initiative and to use our store and donation sites to change lives in a different way this month,” said Nicole Suydam, President and CEO of Goodwill of Orange County. “On average, we see 90,000 donors in April, so we have a unique opportunity to significantly impact the lives of so many in need.”

“California still lags behind the national average of organ donors and our goal is to close that gap,” Jim Martin, CEO, Donate Life CA said.” We are grateful to partner with Goodwill of Orange County, a respected organization that has given us access to a whole new way to register donors.”

“This is our second initiative for Donate Life CA and our first with Goodwill of Orange County, and we couldn’t be more excited about it,” said Ingrid Otero-Smart, President and CEO, Casanova//McCann. “Last time we increased registrations by 19% and it is our goal to beat that number with this initiative”.

Californians hit it out of the park supporting Donate Life this summer

Summer just wouldn’t be the same without baseball. It’s true in California and for all of those supporting Donate Life. Major League Baseball teams all over the state are partnering to support organ, eye, and tissue donation with Donate Life Nights & Days this summer.

Sharing the message about donation is our top priority and California’s OPOs are hitting it out of the park by sharing the message of donation and registering new donors at California’s ballparks.

Folks have been signing up as donors at ballparks across the state. If you have signed up yet, take a few minutes and register as an organ, eye and tissue donor here.

Supporting Donate Life at AT&T Park

On July 3rd,  the San Francisco Giants partnered with Donor Network West for a Donate Life Day at AT&T Park. Balldude, Matt De Fina, a double-lung recipient, and Balldudette, Pati Hughes-Fudge, a liver recipient, are happy to protect the crowd from screaming foul balls.

And Austin Salinas of Fresno, CA, who has been waiting for a kidney for over two years was able to shoot “Play Ball” with Lou Seal. Check out some of the photos here.

Donate Life Night at Petco Park

Down South, at Petco Park, the Padres and Lifesharing celebrated a Donate Life Night on July 30th. David Abbott, who’s younger brother saved the lives of three children and one adult after becoming a donor three years ago, threw the honorary first pitch for the game.

David’s pitch in honor of his brother kicked off Donate Life Night at the San Diego Pardes and was even featured on the local NBC station. You can watch the pitch here!

Even More, Events to Come

Before baseball season is over we’ll have at least two more around the state, giving you a chance to play ball with the Donate Life community.

In Northern California, on August 18th join the Oakland A’s and Donor Network West for a day game. Find out more about attending here.

And on August 25th, you’ll find OneLegacy back at Dodgers Stadium. Get your tickets to join the game here.

No matter who you’re rooting for on the field we’re all rooting for saving lives through donation. We’re sending a big thank you to all of California’s Major League Baseball teams for joining us in this fight!
