KUSI.com – KUSI News – San Diego CA – News, Weather, PPR

SAN DIEGO, Calif., June 10, 2013 – Donate Life California and Living Donation California were featured on San Diego People, a half-hour television show on KUSI 9/51 on Sunday, June 9. Heart transplant recipient Justin Feria and altruistic living kidney donor Lorena Rodriguez shared their stories to highlight the importance of organ donation.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

Since his heart transplant, Justin Feria has completed the Triple Crown of Half Marathons in San Diego – the La Jolla Half, the Carlsbad Half and America’s Finest City Half. He’s also gone skydiving and is now training for an Iron Man triathlon coming up in the fall.

Since her surgery, altruistic living kidney donor Lorena Rodriguez of Chula Vista and her recipient Monique McCray of San Diego have become good friends and travel buddies. Lorena and Monique did not know each other before their surgeries. Lorena, who works as a medical assistant for kidney specialists, donated because she wanted to free someone from dialysis.

KUSI anchor Ross Becker also interviewed Donate Life California President Lisa Stocks and UCSD/Rady Children’s Hospital transplant surgeon Dr. Kristin Mekeel to raise awareness for, and dispel the myths about, organ, eye and tissue donation and how to sign up on California’s donor registry by either checking “Yes” at the DMV or going to www.donateLIFEcalifornia.org. They also talked about Living Donation California, a new program to encourage more Californians to be living kidney donors. For more information go to www.LivingDonationCalifornia.org.

In May, Donate Life California launched a new program, Living Donation California, which invites Californians to be educated about the need for kidney donation, get informed about the risks and benefits of being a living kidney donor, and be guided through the donation process by our state’s world-class kidney transplant centers.

But, did you know it all started with Steve Jobs? That’s right. He became aware of the need for organ donation through his search for a liver while he was battling pancreatic cancer. Read more here.

“The Power Of Two” is Coming to TV May 22!

Everyone in the transplant community knows that it takes power to give the gift of life through organ donation, and survive the wait and thrive once receiving a transplant.  Twin sisters and double lung transplant recipients Ana Stenzel and Isa Stenzel Byrnes, and other members of the transplant community worldwide, show what power can do in the documentary film “The Power Of Two.”  Called “compelling” and “poetic” by the Wall Street Journal, and an “inspiring triumph” by Golden Globe® nominated actor Jack Black, this winner of ten film festival awards has entertained, educated and inspired audiences globally.

Starting May 22, “The Power Of Two” is coming to TV across the U.S.!  The film will screen on the satellite Link TV network nationally, KCET public television in Southern and Central California, and online as part of a two-hour special presentation from KCETLink featuring the full length feature film and brand new footage.  For broadcast dates/times, exclusive clips, blog posts, resources on organ donation, and to watch the film online, go to www.ThePowerOfTwo.tv.
