While Donate Life California manages the state’s official organ, eye and tissue donor registry there are organizations, you local OPO that handles the donation process, local education, donor family support, and so much more.
So what is a local OPO? They are your local organ procurement organization (OPO). These local OPOs are federally designated non-profit organizations that are responsible for the process of deceased-donor organ transplantation including evaluation and procurement. There are 58 local OPOs in the United States which are overseen by UNOS.
California has four local OPOs that each serves a different region of California.
In addition to overseeing the donation process, your local OPO provides a wide variety of public outreach from working in the community, schools, local DMVs and more. If you’re interested in volunteering to support organ and tissue donation then you’ll want to connect with your local OPO.
